November Planets 2008

Venus and Jupiter will be the two most prominent planets in the night sky for the month of November, especially in the early evening. Early in the month, Jupiter and the Moon will hook up and glide across the evening sky. Look for these two during the first week of the month. Jupiter is the second brightest object in our night sky and should be pretty easy to pick out, as it will be within a couple of degrees of the moon during the first couple of days of November.

Also, be on the lookout for Venus, the brightest object in the sky. It will be rising just after Jupiter at the start of the month, and will appear to close in on the gas giant as each night progresses. By the end of the month Venus and Jupiter will be in conjunction, placing them right next to each other in the night sky. Venus is closer to the sun, so it will be moving across the night sky faster then Jupiter.

You will have to get up early in the morning to get a good view of Saturn, but if you are willing to brave the chilly dark morning air than it is worth it.

Yes, I spent about a half hour out on the evening of the 20th from about 11:30 pm til midnight. I saw two. One was faint and the other was fairly bright.
