Mount Merapi May be Closer to Eruption

The head of the lead volcano center in Indonesia said that Mount Merapi may have a stronger than usual eruption. Seismic activity at the Mt Merapi has been on the upswing in recently.  Usually, a lava dome forms in the crater during prior eruptive episodes.  This has made the eruptions of Merapi highly predictable.  However, recent history of the volcano has shown that strong eruptions can occur without the development of lava domes.  Therefore, an eruption at Merapi can be strong, and occur with little warning.

The volcanic alert level for Mount Merapi has been increased to the second highest level.

Mount Merapi sits on the border of Yogyakarta and Central Java in Indonesia. The volcano has had periodic eruptive episodes that are well recorded since 1548.
