Meteors Seen Over Virginia and Maryland

Looks like maybe the Coma Berenicid meteor shower kicked off a few day time and early evening meteors last Monday. The first one was sighted in Maryland at 5:38 PM. This fireball was sighted while the skies were still bright. The chunk of space rock left behind an impressive smoke trail as well. There are some really cool pictures of the meteor's smoke trail on the Baltimore Sun Website.

The other meteor headed east over Virginia about an hour later. This one was not as impressive as the near day time event that occurred over Maryland. It still garnered a few sighting reports and a mention on the about the meteor in the Richmond Times Dispatch.

The Coma Berinicid meteor shower peaked last week about the same time that these meteors were sighted over the eastern United States. A few left overs may still be seen over the next couple of nights.
